E-Week Teacher, Student and/or Parent information!

SWE’s own Connecting Educators to Engineering Program

You’ll find the process surprisingly easy – and infinitely rewarding – when you participate in

"Connecting Educators to Engineering." Thanks to sponsorship by Northrop Grumman Corporation, SWE’s EWeek 2006 Legacy Program targets middle school teachers, guidance counselors and administrators.

Unlike previous outreach efforts, which targeted students directly, “Connecting Educators to Engineering” builds lasting relationships between engineers and educators at our nation’s middle schools. You’ll find many resources to help you reach educators to help them motivate students to consider careers in engineering and technology.

PowerUp the Game, by IBM:

On Saturday, February 16, 2008 IBM will launch a new 3D virtual world game called PowerUp.  Visitors to this 3D world will Power the Planet to generate clean energy and race to save the planet from ecological disaster.  Key themes of the game will be energy, engineering, and diversity.  There will also be classroom lesson plans associated with the energy transformation topics that can be used in the classroom and an interactive module on the value of 3D technologies for learning.   Check the National Engineers Week Foundation website for updated information.

The Science and Engineering Apprentice Program (SEAP)

The Science and Engineering Apprentice Program (SEAP) provides
an opportunity for high school students to participate in research at a
Department of Navy (DoN) laboratory during the summer.  The goals of
the program are to encourage participating students to pursue science
and engineering careers, to further their education via mentoring by
laboratory personnel and their participation in research, and to make
them aware of DoN Research and technology efforts, which can lead to
employment within the DoN.

SEAP provides competitive research internships to approximately
250 high school students each year. Participating students spend eight
weeks during the summer doing research at approximately 15 DoN
laboratories.
The Program runs for eight (8) weeks. The educational grant for first
year participants in the eight week Program is $1500 and second year
participants is $1550.

The American Society for Engineering Education's website (
http://www.asee.org/seap/index.cfm ) is now available for high school
students to apply for the Office of Naval Research  Summer 2007 SEAP and
work at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Philadelphia, PA.  The SEAP
requires high school students to work on a project for a continuous
eight week period.  A selected participant's project will be a research
or development project chosen by the participant's mentor.

The application deadline is January 28, 2008 at 5:30 pm Eastern
Standard Time (EST).  Deadline for references is February 4, 2008 at
5:30 pm Eastern Standard Time (EST).

High school individuals applying for placement at the Carderock
Division must have completed Grade 9  (A graduating seniors are eligible
to apply), must be a U.S. citizens, and be 15 or older.

Please pass the above information on to high schools and to high
school students who may have an interest in participating in the Summer
2008 Program.

Summer Engineering Exploration

The University of Michigan Society of Women Engineers invites all female high school sophomores and juniors to apply to its week-long residential summer camp. Held July 20th - 26th 2003, this Summer Engineering Exploration will introduce young women from around the country to engineering through demonstrations, tours, discussions, and hands-on activities. Each day, we will visit different departments to learn about all engineering disciplines. In addition, we will tour a local plant to gain insight to industry. A design contest will give participants the chance to develop real engineering skills, and teamwork and leadership skills will be developed and emphasized. Participants will have the opportunity to meet students interested in similar subjects and to create lasting friendships. Students interested in math, science, and engineering related fields are encouraged to apply. Use this brochure to apply: http://www.engin.umich.edu/soc/swe/seebrochure2003.doc For more information, please contact: The SEE Committee: Karen Andrews, Theresa Czech, and Sheila Ramamurthy at see2003@umich.edu <mailto:see2003@umich.edu> or (734)763-5027. http://www.engin.umich.edu/soc/swe/outreach.html

A New Web Site Seeks to Increase Minority Students' Use of Federal Scholarships

By BROCK READ

Washington

In an effort to increase the number of minority students who take advantage of federally funded scholarship and job opportunities, a government agency has created a Web site consolidating information on such programs.

The site, called e-Scholar and designed by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, lists government

scholarships, fellowships, grants, and internships geared to high-school, undergraduate, and graduate students.

At present, the site features about $400-million in scholarships, according to Barry K. Williams, a special assistant in the personnel office who is head of the e-Scholar project. The site will expand as information on additional programs becomes available, he said on Friday at a news conference at American University here. The e-Scholar site contains details on internships for minority students, opportunities to travel abroad, and specific programs, like the White House Fellows program.

The site also offers advice on creating résumés that will appeal to government employers. Mr. Williams developed e-Scholar after conversations with officials at historically black colleges, who argued that an online compendium of federal programs would broaden the pool of applicants.

"I was frustrated by the extent to which applications for federal scholarships and fellowships were determined by students' access to the information about them," said Kay Coles James, director of the Office of Personnel Management. "This site is an invaluable resource for students of all backgrounds," said Leonard Spearman, executive director of the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
